Jyoti is a recovery center for female drug users who are seeking to live a drug-free life.

Women in Nepal who are addicted to drugs are often neglected by their families and society and need treatment and counselling urgently. Due to the attitude of the traditional patriarchal society and system of our country, women have been relegated to being second-class citizens. In Nepal, there are more than 100 laws which are discriminatory towards women and their access to financial resources, education, health services, policy as well as decision making is extremely low. Many Nepali famales are victims of violence against women.

Under such circumstances, one can only imagine what the situation of women drug users can be. Due to a lack of proper studies on women drug users in Nepal, it is impossible to estimate the exact population. Studies conducted on HIV and AIDS indicates that female drug users are at high risk of contracting HIV and AIDS because they often practice unprotected sex.

Society views female drug users with suspicion and they themselves lack information on accessing available resources and services regarding employment opportunities and legal support.

In order to help mitigate the problems of women drug users, in 2005 (2061 B.S.), a team of 9 women established a treatment and rehabilitation center for women drug users called “JYOTI”.

JYOTI, (which means "Divine Light",) provides treatment and counselling to female drug users who are victims of discrimination by society and their families. JYOTI helps to bring about a change in their behaviour and lifestyle as well as rehabilitate them in society with dignity by helping them to generate income by providing them with skills.
